SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - A legislative spokeswoman says Democratic Rep. Luciano "Lucky" Varela of Santa Fe has been taken to the hospital to be checked after briefly passing out in his office in the Capitol.

House Democratic majority spokeswoman Carla Aragon said Friday that Varela was OK and alert, but was expected to remain in the Santa Fe hospital for the rest of the day.

She said Varela was unconscious for about 20 seconds in his office and that paramedics were called. She said preliminary information from doctors indicated Varela may have had problems because of blood pressure and allergy medications.

Varela has served in the House since 1987, and only four other current House members have been in office longer. The 78-year-old Varela is retired and a former state controller.
