St. Patrick’s Day is known as a big drinking holiday, that’s why the Albuquerque Police Department and Bernalillo County officials are making sure the streets are safe.

Tavern Taxi, a county program offered free rides to make sure people got home safe.

It wasn’t your average Sunday at Tavern Taxi.

On St. Patrick’s Day, they expect more than 100 calls. On a regular Sunday, they get about 15 calls.

In fact, extra drivers were called into help. Usually, they’ll have about 12 drivers but on a holiday like this, more than 20 drivers are out working.

“We want to keep the roads safe for everybody out there,” said Valerie Carrejo of Tavern Taxi.

Statistics show that in New Mexico, about 30 percent of traffic deaths are DWI related.

“Our families and stuff are out there too as well so we want to keep them safe as well,” added Carrejo.

Ramon Molinar was one of the drivers taking customers to and from the bar.

“It’s going to be all night,” said Ramon Molinar of Tavern Taxi.

Molinar doesn’t mind driving people home because he said that’s less drunk drivers on the road.

“You know you’re doing something good. It makes you feel good,” added Molinar.

If you need a ride from Tavern Taxi call, 505-999-1400.
