Albuquerque police are still looking for the person who shot an officer in the back Sunday night.

The officer was responding to a domestic violence call when he was shot.

It happened near San Mateo and Gibson.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 was told the officer, whose name won’t be released for safety reasons, is recovering from surgery Monday night. KOB was also told he was surrounded by a crowd during a domestic violence call and didn’t even know he was shot until his legs were numb.

KOB talked to a young mother who was walking with her daughter in the neighborhood Monday. She said that’s something she would never do at night.

“It’s not something to be proud of but I mean it’s always around. We always hear it. It worries me a lot because of the kids that are out and just a lot of people that I know are out here,” said Audrey Chavez.

APD told KOB the officer who was shot has been on the job for a year and is engaged to be married.
