A fire has devastated the owners of a popular wood-carving business in Ruidoso.
“Bears R Us” was destroyed last night.
The damage is estimated at more than $100,000.
It is a blacked out city and a burnt down business. It is the city of Ruidoso Downs.
The business belongs to the Mendozas. They don’t have insurance for their handmade collectibles. They say the owners don’t have insurance on the buildings that burned down either.
"Hopefully they let us stay here to rebuild and do it one way or the other,” say the Mendozas.
The Mendozas are worried about having enough to survive, "Our store was burning, this is all we have. We have been working here for the last ten years."
Investigators say the cause of the fire is still unknown. As the fire burned, power was knocked out to all of Ruidoso Downs for three hours.
Ruidoso Downs Police Chief Doug Babcock says, "The flames got to be about sixty feet in the air which caused the power lines which runs over the top of this building to short out the transformer located over there."
“Bears R Us” sells hand-carved novelty items like bears and aliens.
The Mendozas say, "We have been working very hard since December to build inventory for this summer."
The Mendozas are thankful the wind died down and spared them a few bears and aliens.
But most are burned. Now, they have to start over.
"This is something terrible you know,” say the Mendozas.
