ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - The New Mexico Department of Health says there were more than 100 reported cases of primary and secondary syphilis in the state last year.
That's the highest number and rate since 1988.
New Mexico doctors reported 101 cases of primary and secondary syphilis in the state in 2012 - nearly 5 per 100,000 people.
Statistics show that men accounted for 91 percent of the 101 primary and secondary infections and almost half of the early syphilis cases were among Hispanics.
The counties with the highest syphilis case rates in New Mexico were McKinley, Cibola, San Juan and Bernalillo.
