Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department detectives have arrested an Albuquerque cheerleading coach and charged him with sexually abusing a 14-year-old high school student.
BCSO says Jimmy Mata, 20, had an ongoing sexual relationship with the boy, who Mata met at a private cheerleading club where the two were both members.
During the investigation, Mata admitted to engaging in various sex acts with the boy and stated that he had “feelings” for him.
Mata was a contract employee with Albuquerque Public Schools and coached at Albuquerque High School, according to BCSO.
Deputies say they have been told that Mata’s contract with the school district has expired and he is no longer an employee.
Mata told deputies that he was currently living with the boy and his family at their home.
Mata was arrested and booked on eight counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor.
His bond has been set at $200,000 cash or surety.
