Escapee runs to nearby school

A probationer tried to make break for it Friday morning running to a nearby elementary school before being caught and taken back into custody by police.

Samantha Amos, who was about to be transported to the Bernalillo County Jail for violating her probation, escaped and ran to Monte Vista Elementary School. There, she slipped out of her cuffs and dumped them into the boys bathroom, according to the state Department of Corrections.

Albuquerque police alerted school staff that Amos was inside. Police and probation and parole officers already on scene responded and found Amos outside the school on the street.

Albuquerque Public Schools officials said the incident occured around 11:30 a.m. and the school was placed on lockdwon briefly.

Amos faces escaping custody, fleeing from an officer and probation violation charges.
