Off-duty law enforcement officers were at Mass at St. Jude Thaddeus Parish Sunday afternoon when police say 24-year-old Lawrence Capener stabbed several people.
Two of the victims were brought to UNM Hospital but their conditions are not presently known.
KOB Eyewitness News 4 spoke with one of the off-duty law enforcement officers who just happened to be at Mass.
Sgt. Gilbert Flores was with his wife and son when Lawrence Capener jumped over pews and charged towards members of the choir and began to stab them.
He admits he was in shock at first because he had no idea what was going on.
His wife actually nudged him to do something. Right away, he ran toward the alter and, with other men, jumped on Capener and restrained him.
“I couldn’t believe what happened at the church. That was the main thing going through my mind, like, why here?” Flores said.
Flores said it could have turned deadly if fellow churchgoers didn’t act quickly.
Caperner faces three counts of aggravated assault with great bodily harm.
