A man attempted to rob a convenience store before carjacking a vehicle and crashing it, killing him.

The attempted robbery took place at approximately 2:45 Tuesday afternoon at the Y Mart store at 4th Street and Alameda Blvd.

When the robbery attempt failed, the man left the store and subsequently carjacked a vehicle, heading south on 4th Street. He crashed the vehicle at 4th and Ranchitos, rolling the vehicle over and ending up in the yard of an antique store. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not identified the suspect. The carjacking victim’s condition is presently unknown, but authorities said the victim was not in the vehicle during the carjacking.

4th Street was blocked for some time after the incident. Authorities say one northbound lane has since been opened and the southbound should be opening sometime before 6:30 p.m.
