Twenty-three year old David Candelaria Jr. will appear in Metropolitan Court at 1:30 Monday afternoon, charged with conspiracy to commit second degree murder and tampering with evidence. Candelaria Jr. also appeared in Metropolitan Court at 9:30 Monday morning for an unrelated failure to appear on a 2011 DWI charge.
The conspiracy to commit and tampering with evidence charges come from an overnight arrest on Saturday going into Sunday for the shooting death of 8-year-old Sunni Rae Reza.
Police say Reza was shot and killed Friday night while in a car with her father and a driver. Police obtained surveillance photos and video of David Candelaria Jr. and David Candelaria Sr. following the incident and released them to try to track down both men. As of Sunday, police believed Candelaria Sr. was the main suspect in the case, but that Candelaria Jr. was connected.
After arresting Candelaria Jr. overnight going into Sunday, police launched a SWAT operation near Don Felipe and Isleta Sunday morning. They sent in a robot and set off flash bangs for hours, trying to coax out 44-year-old David Candelaria. Eventually, they sent in a K-9 unit. The dog bit Candelaria Sr. before police tased him. He was hospitalized.
As of 11 a.m. Monday, it’s unclear whether he is still in the hospital or being interviewed, but he hadn’t been booked into the Metropolitan Detention Center yet and no court date had been set for him.
