SEATTLE (AP) - The Seattle Mariners have selected New Mexico third baseman D.J. Peterson with the No. 12 overall pick of the amateur baseball draft.

Seattle went the college route with its first-round pick on Thursday night for the third consecutive year. Seattle selected left-hander Danny Hultzen No. 2 overall in 2011 out of Virginia and catcher Mike Zunino out of Florida at No. 3 in 2012.

Peterson is thought to be a potential corner infielder either at third base or first base. In 55 games this season for the Lobos, Peterson hit .408 with 18 home runs and 72 RBIs. His batting average was ranked fourth in the NCAA and tied for the third-most homers hit in the country. He was the Mountain West co-player of the year.

Peterson was previously drafted by the Mariners, taken in the 30th round in 2010, but did not sign.
