A new fireworks ban for Bernalillo County sets some steep consequences for violators. The ban joins a fireworks restriction throughout the city of Albuquerque.

Effective immediately, there is no buying, selling or setting off fireworks that go higher than ten feet, have a coverage area of more than six feet, or are louder than a cap gun on county land. That includes unincorporated areas of the bosque and all East Mountain areas.

Ban violators on county land can face up to $1000 fines and up to a year in jail. On city land, fines go up to $500 and violators can face up to 90 days of jail time.

This comes after Governor Susana Martinez asked counties statewide to consider restrictions or full-out bans on fireworks in this time of extreme fire danger.
