LAS CRUCES, N.M. (AP) - The City Council in Las Cruces will consider Monday whether to repeal impact fees for major road and drainage improvements.
The Las Cruces Sun-News reports that the council adopted major road and drainage impact fees for new residential and commercial development in August 2011, but some council members later said the amount of money that would be charged and collected by the city wouldn't provide enough money for the improvements.
Some council members are hopeful new impact fees could go into effect by the end of the year.
Home builders have asked the council not to enact the new impact fees.
The builders say adding such fees when the city's economy is still recovering could make it hard for first-time home buyers to purchase a house.
