Something stinks in Southeastern New Mexico and neighbors are fed up.  But getting rid of one problem brings another one.

"That is what we're mad about is just the condition of the area," said Ken Harrington, a Happy Valley resident.

Tucked in the hills of Carlsbad lies Happy Valley neighborhood, where some residents aren’t so happy.

"It’s crazy you got people that show up, dig through the dumpsters then throw it on the ground. You can't even pull up to the dumpsters to throw your own trash," said one resident that lives next to the dump site.

"Probably the only thing that is keeping the dumpster divers out this afternoon is the heat.  The smell in the summertime from dead animals being thrown in there is bad," said Harrington.

Rotting animals are just the start, this dump site is designated for Happy Valley neighbors only, but it’s become a hotbed for Carlsbad’s trash.  Neighbors say businesses are using their dumpster instead of driving 12 miles out of the city where they have to pay a fee.

"It gets so high in two days, they have to come in and crush it all down," said Harrington.

After years of complaints from residents, the Eddy County board finally took action and there is fresh air in the future.

The county voted last night to get rid of it.

"We're going to remove it right away as soon as we can," said County Commissioner Jack Volpato.

"It’s convenient to have the dumpsters here, I don't know what I'm going to do with my trash now," said Dennis Lewis, a resident of Happy Valley.

County Commissioners tell us the dump site will be there for the next 60 days before it’s removed.  During that time they’ll be working on finding a new dumping area for the neighborhood.
