Four Corners airport seeing less business

People in Four Corners have less flight options now, and it doesn't look like there will be new ones anytime soon.

Recently the airport lost their Phoenix and Las Vegas flights out of the city, causing a dip in people flying in and out of Farmington.

"It's been a drop in passengers it's taking a hit of about 13 to 14 percent," said Todd Gressick, manager of the Four Corners Regional Airport.

According to airport officials, it would take subsidies to guarantee profits for airline companies to get more flight into Farmington.

Airport officials say they've tried to bring new flights in to replace the old ones without subsidies, but they say it's hard to get flights to come to Farmington because companies would rather go to other regional airports.

"We've approached several airlines on that. We're unfortunately, due to the area and the connectivity to Durango and the amount of service they have up there in Farmington, just not necessarily on their radar," said Gressick.

And customers agree, even though they'd like more flights.

"More flights would be nice but I don't know if it's realistic. It’s a relatively small town and small airport and I'm not use how much demand there is," said airport visitor Chris Hull.

Passengers can still fly to Denver four times a day, but as for future flights, those are up in the air.

The Four Corners Regional Airport does not have any plans to bring subsidized flights into Farmington.  In May the city council vetoed a plan for a subsidized flight from Farmington to Albuquerque.
