Local car wash uses steam instead of water

Albuquerque’s newest car wash could set a new standard for water conservation – how about one gallon for each wash?

Employees at Good Wash Car Wash & Detailing on Chelwood just north of Menaul are using steam to get the job done. Good old steam, served up from a diesel-driven steamer at about 210 degrees.  The average steam wash uses about one gallon of filtered water. Compare that to 30 or 40 gallons at a regular commercial car wash, or maybe 15 gallons at a self-serve, or up to 100 gallons or even more for the old do-it-yourself in the driveway method.

“It’s environmentally friendly because there’s no chemicals used to wash the car,” said Bijan Mowzoun of Good Wash. “It’s just steam, hot steam, 210 degrees Fahrenheit. It dries very quickly, doesn’t leave running water.”

It seems to work well on the interior, too, and you don’t drive off sitting on a damp seat. The Good Wash guys say the hot steam kills a lot of bacteria too.

The grand opening of Good Wash is set for 1 p.m. this Saturday.
