You won’t have to ask "What’s new?" at the Artesia library.  You can’t miss it.  It’s a roof-raising, traffic stopping surprise.  The biggest thing to hit the small town in a long time.

When an Artesia family heard the mural by Roswell artist Peter Hurd was being torn down in Houston, they decided to give it a new home.

Two years later and after quite a journey, the convoy carrying the mural finally rolled into town and the excitement was contagious.

“This is just so marvelous, this is a small community and we're getting something that nobody else in the United States has," said Artesia library supervisor Pam Castle.

“We think it’s just fantastic.  We think that it’s just one of the greatest things that could ever happen to Artesia," said longtime Artesia resident Joyce Connor.

The mural didn’t make it without some delays.  First rain, then traffic, even a train.  But the truck towing the 165 foot trailer finally made it.

At 47 feet long, the library said this is the largest mural ever transported.

Library architect Jose Zalaya said cranes removed the roof of the building to lower the mural inside.  The installation is expected to take up to 20 hours.

“It’s a huge engineering feat to do this. It doesn't happen every day. It doesn't happen in New Mexico, it doesn't happen in southeastern New Mexico.  I think only Artesians can pull this off," said Zalaya.

The mural is called "The Future Belongs to Those Who Prepare for It." It will be unveiled on November 9 for the library’s opening.
