SOCORRO COUNTY -- A woman from Germany was killed in a crash with a drunken driver on Wednesday afternoon, according to New Mexico State Police.

Officers responded to the scene of the two-vehicle crash on I-25 just south of Bernardo, N.M. Police said the driver, 37-year-old Keith Bailey, fled the scene, but was located nearby.

Investigators said both vehicles were traveling northbound on I-25 in the right lane when the drunken driver rear-ended a car carrying four people.

A passenger in the back of the vehicle, 65-year-old Birthe Rasmussen Moehring of Berlin, Germany, was killed due to the impact. The other three passengers did not have serious injuries.

Police arrested Bailey and charged him with vehicular homicide, driving while intoxicated and leaving the scene of an accident. Police said a warrant was obtained for a blood draw on Bailey, who showed signs of intoxication when officers made contact with him.

Bailey was booked into the Socorro County Detention Center.
