After the recent rains, many mold removal companies in the metro area are booked and staying busy.
One Albuquerque family was hit hard by a storm in July. The home is now a mess of ripped out carpet, pulled out cabinets and removed drywall after mold attacked it.
"Oh no, not in New Mexico," said Eva Mueller. "I had no idea that much water could cause that much damage."
Mueller has been helping her daughter, who is extremely allergic to mold.
In July a big rain storm brought in just a little bit of water, but the mold spread fast and fierce through the home. The family still isn't sure when they can move back in.
"If it didn't get properly dried out with equipment and meters, you may want to check it out," said John Mattock from Paul Davis Restoration.
Mattock says mold can start to growing in 72 hours. It usually starts in dark, low air flow areas like in cabinets, wall cavities and attics.
He says you can't just wipe it down with bleach and expect it to disappear.
"You don't really kill mold," Mattock said. "It might go dormant but the minute moisture or humidity is reintroduced, the problem surfaces again and goes air born."
Mold removal can cost upwards of thousands of dollars. Many people don't know if their home owner's insurance covers mold removal. Make sure to check your policy.
