Federal, state, and local authorities arrested three men accused of trying to have sex with young children.
In the last week, Agents with Homeland Security Investigations said Dean Chavez, Jr., Kyle Crockett, and Jaret Warden each thought they were about to meet with a child, but met with law enforcement instead. Agents said that the men first met the supposed children online.
“It’s amazing to see the various economic groups, the types of individuals -- you just don’t know who’s out there, who’s looking to hurt your children,” HSI assistant special agent in charge Kevin Abar said.
It the last year, the SPEED task force – Sexual Predator and Exploitation Enforcement Detail – netted more than 70 people, Abar said. The task force formed in mid-2012 and involves law enforcement personnel from HSI, Albuquerque Police, the Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Office, the New Mexico Attorney General’s office, and Internet Crimes Against Children.
The 70 arrests involve not only accused predators from New Mexico, but people from around the country and the world. Abar said each person was making an attempt to meet with a child in New Mexico.
“What I can see is that we are out there, and it’s only a matter of time. We will arrest them and they will go to jail for hurting our youth,” he said.
