A 25-year-old cold case out of Valencia County has been reopened and assigned a multi-agency task force to solve the crime.
19-year-old Tara Calico went missing back in 1988 while on her daily bike ride near Belen. No arrests have ever been made. Now the Valencia County Sheriff's Department is teaming with the Bernalillo County Sheriff's Department, Albuquerque Police Department, New Mexico State Police, and the Department of Homeland Security for the cold case task force.
Melinda Esquibel was friends with Calico, and has been making a documentary about her disappearance. She says she believes all of Belen knows what happened to Calico, but says law enforcement hasn't had enough evidence to put anyone behind bars. She does hope the task force helps bring the people responsible for Calico's disappearance to justice.
"We're not really naming names in the documentary, we're telling the story and we're trying to let you know what happened to this young lady," Esquibel said. "Through that, you can get an idea of how deep the cover up is and people can decide for themselves what they believe and hopefully it will inspire people to come forward with the location of her body."
Valencia County Sheriff Louis Burkhart says they reopened the case because it's been 25 years and they have had a lot of advances in technology that he hopes can help solve the case.
