ALBUQUERQUE -- Jury deliberations began Thursday in the capital murder trial of Arizona inmate John McCluskey.
McClusky is accused of killing an Oklahoma couple in Santa Rosa after escaping from prison in 2010.
The defense wrapped up their closing arguments on Wednesday, telling the jury there was no proof that McCluskey pulled the trigger and killed Gary and Linda Haas.
They argued McCluskey's alleged accomplices, Cassalyn Welch and Tracy Province, were liars. Both testified against McCluskey just weeks ago.
On the stand, Welch told the jury she helped McCluskey and Province escape from prison by bringing them pliers and guns. Welch and Province have both pleaded guilty to their roles in the crime and face life in prison.
On Tuesday, prosecutors argued McCluskey planned to kill people in the way after escaping from prison. They said Welch never changed her story and always said McCluskey was the one who shot the Haases.
If convicted, McCluskey could face a possible death sentence.
