ALBUQUERQUE -- A father described by his neighbors as a "good, Christian man" will appear in court Monday on charges related to his wife's stabbing death.
Late Saturday, Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a home on El Ensueno NW. Dispatchers received a call from a 12-year-old boy saying his father attacked his mother.
Deputies said the boy and his 6-year-old brother witnessed Jerry Chavez stab his estranged wife, Sandra Ferrales.
Friends and neighbors of Chavez, who is an active member Legacy Church, said they couldn't believe the news.
The Albuquerque Domestic Violence Resource Center told KOB Eyewitness News 4 they could not comment specifically about this case, but said showing the outside world their "good side" is what abusers do.
Center representative Lynn Gentry-Wood said abusers who hide their violent behavior are really after two things.
"Power and control, and the individual that's most susceptible is the person that they love and that loves them," she said.
The sheriff's department confirmed they did respond to a domestic violence call for Chavez and Ferrales, earlier this year.
CYFD has custody of the two boys, but they will soon be released to other family members.
