The five-day streak of perfect flying conditions for the Balloon Fiesta came to an end Thursday morning due to gusty winds.
The rain and wind created a ghost town at Balloon Fiesta Park, which is bad news for vendors for tonight's canceled Special Shapes Glodeo.
Vendors like Matty Romero from Perico's rely heavily on days like today.
"Thursday, the special shapes, is a very big day for the vendors, you know," Romero said.
Obviously, Mother Nature doesn't care what day it is.
For volunteer Jim Wygant, today happened to be his first day at the Fiesta.
"I just got here today from Texas. Friend of mine is in the Kiwanis and I was helping him out with little odds and ends," Wygant said.
Even though today looks gloomy for business, vendors say that this year has been much better than previous Fiestas.
"I think it's been pretty good. We've had one day so far--that's pretty good. We've had eight days before. We've had five days. We've had four days. I mean--you know, it's just the way it is," Romero said.
Even though the flag is red tonight, better days are in the forecast, so we're hoping for good flying weather from here on out.
If you plan on going to tonight's fireworks show, admission and parking will be free. Vendors will be on hand as well.
