HAGERMAN, N.M. -- A man involved in a shootout with police officers south of Roswell died from his injuries on Monday.

The incident began around 9 a.m. when a New Mexico State Police sergeant made contact with a woman standing on the side of U.S. 285. The woman told the sergeant her significant other was further up the road. When the sergeant approached the man's vehicle, he drove away.

Other state police officers and Chaves County sheriff's deputies joined the pursuit until the suspect's vehicle struck a set of spike strips and was forced to stop near Chickasaw Road. The suspect then opened fire at the officers, hitting a state police officer in the leg.

Officers returned fire, killing the suspect.

U.S. 285 is closed in both directions while authorities continue their investigation. The highway is shut down from Chickasaw Road to Shawnee Road. Traffic is being diverted to Highway 2.

The shooting took place on Chickasaw Road near the Roswell Correctional Center. The scene is not impacting the prison, according to state prison officials.

Paramedics transported the injured officer from the scene by air ambulance. He has since been released from the hospital, according to state police.

The identities of those involved in the shooting have not been released.
