A car chase in Chaves County ended with one man dead and a State Police officer in the hospital.
State Police tell KOB Eyewitness News 4 officers pulled over to help a woman on the side of Highway 285 near Roswell Monday morning.
The woman told police her boyfriend was further up the road. When police tried to pull him over he sped away.
Police used spike strips to stop him. At that point the man started firing shots at State Police officers and Chaves County deputies.
They shot back, killing the man.
One officer was hit in the leg. He was taken to the hospital and later released.
Investigators are unsure as to what the man sped off or fired the shots.
While the investigation was taking place, a Roswell police detective was injured and a woman was killed when several cars crashed into each other.
The detective was directing traffic when the accident occurred. He was flown out of state to be treated for his injuries.
