State officials say 13,000 New Mexicans have applied for health care services through Medicaid since enrollment started earlier this month.

The program expanded to cover more low income adults.

Benefits will not start until January.

The federal government will pick up the initial cost of those who enroll.

About a quarter of New Mexico’s population receives health care through Medicaid.
