Albuquerque residents are recovering Monday from an unnerving weekend in which three police officers and a Bernalillo County deputy were shot while pursuing an armed man.

The suspect, 35-year-old Christopher Chase, is dead and now, police say they're trying to unravel who he was and why he started shooting.

On Saturday, police served a search warrant on Chase's home in southwest Albuquerque and found something suspicious in the window. To them, it looked like a booby trap. But as they cautiously made their entrance, they discovered the trap wasn't real.

Police have not yet revealed what else they found inside the home.

"This was something that hits us hard. To see such a great person, so nice, and then suddenly to have officers telling us to go and we didn't know what was going on," said Alfredo Rodriguez, who lived next door to Chase.

Rodriguez said Chase was on disability.

According to police, Chase had a tattoo on his body that read "cop killer."

Christopher Chase, 35, is accused of shooting two APD officers and a Bernalillo County sheriff's deputy.
