We have new details about an officer involved shooting in Roswell. A Roswell police sergeant and a 35-year-old man were shot. KOB Eyewitness News 4 was at the scene.
It started with a 911 call to police.
A man called from the emergency phone right outside the Roswell Police Department Monday night.
"I'm at the Roswell Police Department right now. I was with my brother driving and he's drunker, he's totally drunk out of his mind. He was going to kill himself. I cracked him over the head with a pistol, but he's bleeding. I tried to take him to the hospital and he jumped out," said the 911 caller.
That call sent police to the Town Plaza apartments looking for 35-year-old Richard Johnson.
Police said when Sergeant Cruz Zavala arrived, he was shot. So was Johnson.
Neighbors said the scene was chaotic.
“There was a cop car about there, another one over there," said neighbor Kendall Wampler.
“They blocked the roads,” said neighbor Roberto Gonzalez.
Neighbors said they’re still a little shaken up.
"I mean, I couldn't sleep yesterday, I just stayed in my living room you know looking after my family," said Gonzalez.
So are Roswell Police. This is the second officer to be hospitalized within a week.
“Right now everyone is keeping both sergeants in their thoughts and prayers and we're hoping for a quick recovery," said Roswell Police Public Information Officer Sabrina Morales.
Right now Roswell Police are not saying if it was Johnson who shot the officer. The Roswell officer was taken to the hospital and has been released. Johnson was airlifted out of state for his injuries.
