Navajo Prep in Farmington is on track to offer the International Baccalaureate program to its students.

The school would be the eighth in New Mexico to offer the program, but it would be the first in the U.S. that predominantly serves Native American students.

Navajo Prep has always had successful students, but a new program at the school will hopefully give them another academic boost.

Navajo Prep is currently waiting to hear if they'll be able to offer the International Baccalaureate program to its students.

"It’s a program to develop international mindedness through high school education and bringing a higher level to their education," said math teacher Donna Fernandez.

The IB program requires students to take more courses, and undergo projects and assessments. They’ll be able to start college as a sophomore instead of a freshman.

If the school gets approved, the current sophomores will be the first class offered the program.

"It’s such a good program to have because not many kids are offered this," said Tyler Bahe, sophomore at Navajo Prep.

Taylor Francisco is excited for the IB program because she thinks it'll help her achieve her dreams. She wants to go to an ivy league school and major in math.

"I’m looking for a more of a challenge than just regular preparatory school and i want to be more globally aware," she said.

Teachers are also looking forward to the new challenges.

"They get to own that learning they get to be excited as I am about my own subject and see how it connects to the world," said Fernandez.

Navajo Prep will find out in the spring if they are approved for the program.
