A judge ruled Monday that an Albuquerque man will spend 30 years behind bars after he killed his girlfriend's five-year-old son last May.
"Isaiah was an innocent little boy and so full of life," the mother said.
Her painful sobs rang through the courtroom, but no matter what she said, she knows it won't bring her young son back.
"Not having my son has been hell," she told the judge. "Not a day goes by that I don't find myself wishing that my son would walk in that door and say, 'Hi momma. I'm home.'"
Richard Guitierrez, the boyfriend of the mother, admitted to police that he threw her young son after the child lied about wetting his pants. Isaiah later died at the hospital from severe brain injuries.
Guitierrez and his family claim it was an accident and he would never intentionally hurt isaiah.
"We are being sentenced as well and increasing our pain," Guitierrez's father told the court.
After listening to letters from both families, Judge Ross Sanchez handed down the maximum sentence of 30 years to Guitierrez. Emotions ran high on both sides of the courtroom, as both families were torn apart and broken after their losses.
