Police have not released very many details about why officers opened fire on 34-year-old Shaine Sherril. They say he had several felony warrants and that one officer believed he had a gun. But the woman who called 911 and put cops after Sherill in the first place doesn’t believe he was armed.

“It's shocking. The whole situation is shocking. You don't think, we know the lifestyle he chose but you don't think he's gonna be shot by the police who were supposed to apprehend him,” the mother of one of Sherill’s kids said.

She says she knew he was on drugs when he showed up to her home, angrily threw a backpack at her car and then ran away on foot. She also knew he had warrants out for his arrest, so she called police.

Hours later on the news, she heard there’d been an officer-involved-shooting nearby.

“My gut told me it was him so I flew over there and sure enough,” she said.

Police have said little about what happened when they confronted Sherill. APD says an officer believed Sherill had a gun, but police have not confirmed that.

“When he came here, he wasn't armed. He wasn't armed. He didn't have a history of guns and knives,” his child’s mother said.

She says she and Sherill’s family have repeatedly asked police for updates on how he is doing. All they know is that he was shot. But she claims police won’t tell them anything else.

“He's still human. A criminal, a felon, whatever he is, he's still human so to not give an update...nobody has an update. Nobody has given anybody any information and we're talking 24 hours. Is he even alive?” he said.
