FRUITLAND, N.M. -- Two people are dead and a 5-month-old baby hospitalized after a crash in San Juan County early Friday.
The crash took place around 6 a.m. on U.S. 64 near County Road 6800. According to the San Juan County Sheriff's Office, a white pickup traveling eastbound crossed the median and struck a black SUV.
The driver of the SUV, a 37-year-old male, and a 20-year-old female passenger were pronounced dead at the scene. A 5-month-old infant also riding in the SUV was taken by air ambulance to a hospital in Albuquerque.
The child is listed in critical but stable condition. Medical personnel are optimistic that she will survive her injuries.
The driver of the pickup truck suffered non-life threatening injuries and was transported to San Juan Regional Center.
Authorities say alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash. The cause of the crash remains under investigation.
