Cincinnati was handed its first loss of the season to New Mexico, 63-54 Saturday afternoon at the Pit.

Cameron Bairstow led the Lobos with 24 points and 13 rebounds. He was 11-12 from the free throw line against a gritty Cincinnati (7-1) team down low.

New Mexico (7-1) held Cincinnati’s Sean Kirkpatrick to just one bucket in the first half. He finished with 19 points in the game off a quick 7 point spurt to open the second half. Kilpatrick was still limited to just 5-18 shooting, including 1-7 from long range in the game.

Alex Kirk had 15 points and grabbed 6 boards for New Mexico. Kendall Williams posted 10 points on just 2-4 field goal shooting. He had 5 rebounds and 4 assists.

Cincinnati, down by as much as 15 in the first half, utilized a press on the Lobos to close the gap to just 2 points early in the second half. During that stretch Kilpatrick had 9 points for the Bearcats.

But, a layup by Bairstow and a dunk by Kirk that brought fans in the Pit to their feet kept the momentum with New Mexico.

The Bearcats came to within 5 points with 7 minutes left in the game but Bairstow was solid down the stretch and gave the Lobos a double digit lead late in the game.

Justin Jackson scored 10 points and Troy Caupain scored 11 off the bench for Cincinnati.

The Bearcats shot just 29 percent from the field in the game. New Mexico was 50 percent from the field.

On Dec. 14 the Lobos will play No. 6 Kansas, who lost 75-73 by a buzzer beater against Colorado on Saturday.
