KOB Eyewitness News 4 has learned more about a man who police say went on a violent rampage in Rio Communities over the weekend.

24-year-old James Hutchens attacked his girlfriend and her mother with a hatchet.

Hutchens was arrested for aggravated battery, aggravated burglary and kidnapping.

Both women were sent to the hospital.

The mother is in critical condition and the girlfriend has been released.

A neighbor tells KOB that a swarm of police lights filled the neighborhood early Saturday, but no one in the Valencia County community wanted to talk on camera.

Hutchens was arrested early Saturday morning at his grandmother’s house in Peralta.

Hutchins is not a stranger to the law, but his troubles seem to have begun this year.

The Valencia County Jail confirms Hutchens was convicted of DWI and careless driving in March.

The manager of the Belen apartment complex, where the incident occured, tells KOB that the women attacked were quiet tenants who paid their rent on time.

Very little else is known about the women, or their injuries.

The names of the victims have not been released by police.
