Albuquerque police have released the identity of a man fatally shot by an officer near the UNM campus on Sunday night.

Andy Jack Snider, 37, died at the hospital after police shot him near Central and University. Acting APD Chief Allen Banks said Snider charged at officers with a weapon and they feared for their safety.

A law enforcement source tells KOB that the suspect was armed with a hammer.

Police pursued Snider after he was identified as a possible suspect in an assault in the area. The victim called police to report the crime from a 7-Eleven around 9:30 p.m.

Snider fled and hid from officers, but when they tried to talk to him, Chief Banks said Snider charged at the officers. Chief Banks said an officer first shot a bean bag at Snider, but when he wouldn't stop, another officer fired his gun.

This is the seventh shooting involving Albuquerque police officers this year.
