The owner of a Christmas tree lot in Albuquerque is helping a family after a tree they planted at a cemetery was chopped down and stolen.

Connie Cardenas says her family planted a pine tree at her brother Gilbert Tapia's grave 16 years ago. The family decorated the tree every year for the holidays, but when they went this time, they found it chopped down to a stub.

David Velasquez, owner of Dave's Evergreens, saw the story on KOB Eyewitness News 4 and offered to give the family a tree from his own lot.

"I understand that he used to like the mountains quite a bit. That's kind of what I am, a mountain man. I thought I could help the family out," Velasquez said.

Tapia's family told KOB they're grateful for the offer. Although the temporary tree won't replace their 16-year-old pine, they family says they're happy to see good people out there.
