Insurance agents spent hours helping New Mexicans sign up for health insurance as the deadline looms.
The service was all free of charge.
However, the process is still very confusing.
Dozens of New Mexicans met in Albuquerque on Saturday to get free, one-on-one help from insurance agents.
Jana Ray has not had insurance for about a year.
“It's very confusing. You know on what you're going to be covered on and how it's going to be covered,” Ray said.
She met with James Tome, who helped her fill out her application.
But they hit a few roadblocks when they tried to get someone on the phone to finalize.
“It took us 48 minutes today to get through. And after three tries [laughs],” Ray said.
"That is one of the faster ones.” Tome said. “So, normally we're looking at an hour or more per applicant.”
Jana is now covered come January 1st.
“I just found out that I know have health coverage, which is a great relief,” Ray said.
More than 16,000 New Mexicans have applied for coverage so far.
However, only 8,500 have actually picked out a plan.
The clock is ticking for thousands who hope to meet the December 23rd deadline.
