An Albuquerque woman is helping needy children to honor the memory of her late son.

Terry Vargas organized an art sale at Cornado Center.

The money goes to buying shoes for children in need.

The event was organized in memory of her son Lawerence, who was killed in a shooting in 2008.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 talked to Terry about what the event means to her.

"It's beyond a pair of shoes it's the message that goes along with it, it's a message of healing and hope and taking something as terrible as this adversity of losing my son and turning into something positive,” Vargas said.

The Vargas family has handed out more than 5,000 pairs of shoes to needy children across New Mexico in the last five year.
