Holiday shopping has turned into a nightmare for about 40 million Target customers across the country. The company has confirmed that those customers had their credit or debit card information stolen when they recently bought something from November 27 to December 15.

So do you know what to look for to see if you’re a victim?

It’s the news that has a lot of people worried.

“Unfortunately around the holidays people are more susceptible to identity theft,” said Mike Medley with ID Theft Resolutions in Albuquerque.

He said if you shopped at any Target lately call the company at (866) 852-8680 or call your bank. “Ask them if there’s been anything, any activity with your card above and beyond what you did,” added Medley.

Another tip – check your statements carefully and check them monthly. “The thieves will charge a very low dollar amount on a card just to see if it will work, just to see if the card is active,” said Medley.
