Same-sex couples all across New Mexico celebrated an historic ruling yesterday. The New Mexico Supreme Court ruled that gay and lesbian couples can legally marry in our state.
A big group gathered at Morningside Park in Albuquerque Thursday night. One of the people who attended was Karen Schmiege. She met with KOB Eyewitness News 4 just hours after the ruling came down with her partner Pat Catlett.
"For me, probably one of the best Christmas presents and it's also...2013 is probably one of the luckier years in our lives," Schmiege said.
KOB's cameras were rolling back in August of this year when the two stood first in line in Bernalillo County to get their marriage license.
Now they're officially married and it is not just important to them emotionally. It's helping them financially.
"Not only was our federal social security involved, but it became some other state monies that we can now share that we weren't able to do before," Catlett said.
The couple was considering moving to one of the other 16 states that allow same sex marriage. Now, they say they are happy to stay in New Mexico through their retirement.
