KOB Eyewitness News 4 has learned that an Albuquerque man accused of stabbing his 12-year-old stepson, confessed to the crime to a convenience store clerk.

Avelino Chavez is charged with child abuse with great bodily harm and is in jail on a $50,000 bond.

The incident happened Friday night at an apartment complex on Stillwell Drive in the Northeast Heights.

Neighbors called 911 because they heard a man screaming, “You are evil and going to die.”

Neighbors found the boy with two stab wounds to his chest and back.

Police say Chavez was found at a nearby 7-Eleven where the clerk says he called 911 from their payphone and hung up.

When the clerk asked Chavez why he called police he said it was because he murdered somebody.

The clerk called police and Chavez was arrested on the spot.

The 12-year-old is recovering and is in CYFD custody.
