Some New Mexico lawmen are taking time away from the streets and hitting store shelves with one goal: To put a smile on a child's face this holiday season.
Christmas came a little early for some kids in San Juan County, thanks to the men and women in law enforcement.
More than 80 kids were able to participate in the “Shop with your Cops” event in Farmington.
The San Juan county sheriff's department foundation was able to raise enough money to give each $100 to shop.
Half the money went to toys they wanted and the other half went to clothes they needed.
"A lot of them without this event wouldn't be able to have some of the presents," said Deputy Joshua Lynn.
They also hope this one-on-one experience gives the children a better perspective about who these officers are.
"it a great way for kids something back to kids who have had negative contact with police and show then that were not always here to be bad were her to help out the community," said Deputy Cody Moulder.
And even though the event is for the kids, deputies we talked to get a lot out of the experience too.
"its kind of why we got into the job to give something back to the community and do something good for people," said Moulder.
And it's the smiles on these kids’ faces that let them know they're doing their job right.
