LOS LUNAS, N.M. -- Los Lunas police say a suspect shot by an officer during a SWAT standoff is in critical condition.

The situation began as a domestic disturbance call before 10 a.m. When officers arrived at the scene on Highway 314 near Main Street, they found a group of people standing in front of the house.

The group told officers that a man had attacked a woman before running inside the home. They said the man was heavily armed.

A SWAT team was called to assist at the scene. When they arrived, an officer spotted the suspect outside the home holding something that looked like a rifle. Police said the suspect's actions made the officer feel unsafe, prompting the officer to fire one shot.

The injured suspect ran back into the home and barricaded himself inside. He eventually surrendered and was taken to the hospital.

Highway 314 at Main Street will be reopened soon, police say.

Police initially thought a second suspect was inside the home, but did not find anyone else during their investigation.
