Taking a walk down Main Street in Aztec is like going back in time, and now the city is trying to get recognized for its historic atmosphere.

Aztec is trying to get citizens involved in putting together an application to make this area of town an official New Mexico Mainstreet.

"Through this distinction it can provide a lot of mechanism for business support economic development and marketing avenues as well as historic and cultural preservation options," said Roshana Moojen, community development director for the city.

The distinction would also make them eligible for funding for things like renovations, marketing and cultural enterprises.

But in order to make it happen they need the support from the community.

Several years ago, Aztec put in an application to become a main street program, but it never got off the ground."

This time around they're hoping to get more support.

"To be completely successful we'll need a re-energized community base we need business and community organization to be on fire about the topic," said Moojen.

They hope they'll find people who know how important this area of town is for the community.

"Preserving our historic main avenue is critical," said Moojen.

Residents interested in participating are encouraged to go to the first meeting on January 6 at 5 p.m. at the Aztec Visitor's Center.
