On Saturday, more than a million Americans will lose their unemployment benefits after an emergency program wasn't included in the latest federal budget deal. In New Mexico, 5,400 people will be impacted.

The cut only affects people who are on the federal extension program, which means they've been getting checks for longer than the usual 26 weeks given by the state.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 visited a job center Friday and found quite a few people who are on the extension program and are now worried about how they're going to live.

KOB broke the news to one woman who gets help from the program. Maria Rodriguez had no idea about Saturday's cuts. She said she uses the money to pay for her mortgage.

"I have 4 kids so I have to, it's just me. So yeah, I've got to survive," said Rodriguez.

Some lawmakers, both Democrat and Republican, said they want to reinstate the benefits when they return to Capitol Hill in January.
