New details from witnesses, and from the man accused of shooting his own friend at a New Year's Eve party in Rio Rancho, paint a picture of total chaos and confusion.

Police say Ryan Wathen shot Carlos Rueda in the head during a party at a home in Rio Rancho on Tuesday night.

The responding officer's report gives new insight into what happened inside the house.

The report describes what as many as eight witnesses told investigators. According to partygoers, Rueda and Wathen went to a bedroom alone. Some time later, a gunshot rang out. Some witnesses said it sounded like fireworks. Before anyone could stop him, Wathen ran, and according to witnesses said, "He told me to put the gun to his head and pull the trigger."

Witnesses said Rueda was laying on the floor, blood on his face and on the wall.

Wathen ran to his father's house in Rio Rancho, and that's where police caught up to him.

According to the report, Wathen told police Rueda had encouraged him to check out a gun that was laying on a computer desk. Wathen said Rueda told him the gun wasn't loaded, and insisted Wathen trust him. That's when Wathen said Rueda told him to "Put it to my head" and pull the trigger, so he did.

Neighbors say in the past year the SWAT team has been called out to Wathen's father's house three times.

Neighbors weren't surprised Wathen was arrested, given his history of run-ins with the law.
