Valencia County firefighters battled flames and wind to snuff out a brush fire that threatened half dozen homes near Belen Saturday afternoon.

The fire consumed about ten acres before firefighters got it under control and contained.

Neighbors saw sparks shooting out of an electrical power box near a mobile home and called in the alarm. Fire trucks roared in from every fire station in the county.

“They did an extensive, wonderful job,” said Fire Chief Steve Gonzales. “We got here; it was full active flames surrounding me entirely. I was first arriving on scene. The next arriving unit – I just had them do the best they could with what they had. It was just two men in a brush truck but they attacked aggressively.”

No one was hurt.

Brush trucks remained on the scene Saturday evening in case the wind whipped up flames in any hot spots.
