A wrong way driver was shot by New Mexico State Police on Interstate 25 south of Las Vegas, NM last night.

Authorities received a call about 10:40 p.m. on Saturday about a driver going north on the southbound I-25 lanes at mile marker 323 near San Jose, state police Sgt. Damyan Brown said in a release.

Attempts to deflate the driver’s tires did not stop the vehicle as it continued north toward Las Vegas. State police conducted a PIT maneuver to force the car off the road.

After that effort the car reportedly drove toward an officer, at that point police shot the driver, Brown said.

The driver, who has not been identified, was sent to a nearby hospital.

No officers were injured in the incident.

Interstate 25 was closed as during the investigation but has since re opened.
