The city of Carlsbad is in the market for a new police chief.

Carlsbad Police Chief Daniel Fiero abruptly retired on December 31st.

According to the Carlsbad Current Argus, some city officials did not even know about Fiero’s plans until the week before.

In a written statement, City Administrator Steve McCutcheon said Fierro was planning to start a business and stay in Carlsbad.

Fiero had been with the Carlsbad Police Department for 20 years and served as its chief since 2011.
